This free, NGSS-aligned lesson by Renee Haines puts students in the driver’s seat of a real-world bioethical dilemma: the restoration of the American chestnut.

How do we actually know how DNA replicates? This free, NGSS aligned lesson lets students work through the evidence themselves.
Created by #APBiology teacher and #SCLAmbassador Minu Basu, this 45–70 minute lesson walks students through the classic Meselson–Stahl experiment, comparing three competing models of DNA replication and using data to figure out which one holds up.
In the classroom, students will:

🧪 Predict density banding across generations
🤏 Model DNA replication using colored pipe cleaners
📊 Practice scientific reasoning and data analysis
