Yesterday was a milestone day for the Science Communication Lab! We officially kicked off our SFUSD Secondary Science Educator Cohort at the Google Community Space in San Francisco! 🌉

In partnership with #SCLAmbassador and teacher-leader Tess Carlson, our full-day workshop gave teachers a chance to experience our film-integrated pedagogy firsthand. Highlights included stepping outside for hands-on observation activities led by Ariel Raymond, diving into ecological modeling with Tess Carlson, and collaborating on lesson plans with Shannon Behrman.

We finished the day energized, inspired, and ready to support these amazing educators as they bring cinematic storytelling and inquiry-based learning into their classrooms this year.

Thank you to all of our SFUSD educators for bringing your creativity, passion, and expertise. We can’t wait to see your co-designed lessons come to life in your classrooms! 🔬🎬

We’re so excited to meet our SFUSD educators tomorrow at the Google Community Space to kick off our year-long district pilot! 🧪✨

Co-led with #SCLAmbassador and teacher-leader Tess Carlson, this program brings together middle and high school science teachers to co-design, test, and integrate film-based, hands-on learning into SFUSD’s core curriculum. Together, we’re using cinematic storytelling to address key classroom challenges: building scientific literacy, driving student engagement, and fostering strong science identities.

Here’s to a year of collaboration, community, and humanizing science learning! 🎬🔬

“SCL content takes science and makes it real. It showcases the thought processes, experimental design, the questions, the humor, and the real lives of scientists.
Anytime we can make science real for students, we can make students think they’re capable of doing science.” – Renee Haines, High School Biology Teacher and 2025 #SCLAmbassador

Thank you Renee for being an integral part of our pilot Educator Ambassador program! Looking to join our community of educators using film & hands-on learning to deepen student engagement, science identity, and understanding of how science works?
