Reel Education
is an exciting new initiative to collaborate with educators to bring SCL films to classrooms nationwide, maximizing their impact for students.
At the SCL, we transform science education by bringing the people and process of science into classrooms.
Our award-winning films use immersive storytelling to highlight diverse scientists' voices, journeys, and research—engaging students with stories that build science identity, spark curiosity, and deepen appreciation for scientific inquiry.
Preliminary studies show that our videos are reshaping how students learn, understand, and experience science.
Telling superb stories with scientific credibility since 2006

Why Teachers and Scientists Love Our Films
Truly inspiring.
They showcase the beauty of science in an easy-to-understand way. These films have motivated me to explore new and creative approaches to teaching science communication.
I love these videos so much.
They have... provided me with ample information to create engaging stories in class to explain concepts. This approach greatly enhances student knowledge retention.
Excellent quality.
The films show both rigorous science and highlight scientists as part of cultures and society.
I love them!
The videos are so engaging and do such a great job highlighting the humans behind the science.
Really great resource!
I always pin your emails and check them for resources when the semester quiets down.
They are of excellent quality.
Hearing directly from researchers who were pioneers in their field is very inspiring for students and me.
Our Films Explore...
Concepts instead of memorization.
Through real-world examples, students experience how scientific concepts develop and apply in varied contexts, cultivating curiosity and critical thinking over rote learning.
Science is a journey.
We embed the process and philosophy of science in every story we tell. These stories help students gain insight into science as a dynamic, iterative journey.
Science is a human endeavor.
In many of our films, scientists aren’t shy about sharing something personal such as their backgrounds, identities, or motivations for doing research. These stories help students relate to scientists and foster their science identities.
Specific Activities Planned for 2025
Launch our ambassador program of 15-20 life science educators to serve as advisors to SCL’s outreach efforts, promote our content within their peer groups, and help SCL align video content with current K-12 and college science standards.
Use films as a catalyst for direct in-person engagement between students and scientists.
Develop learning tools and educator resources to pair with SCL videos to make them more accessible to a wider K-12 educator audience.
Convene in–person professional development workshops for educators to share SCL content and develop further insights and training around using video in life science and environmental science classrooms.
