Ron Vale is a Member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, and a faculty member in the MIT Department of Biology. From 2020 to 2025, he served as HHMI Vice President and Executive Director of HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus.
Prior to his leadership role at Janelia, Vale was a Professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he had been a faculty member since 1986. For nearly four decades, the Vale lab has investigated how proteins and membrane-bound organelles are actively transported inside cells, uncovering fundamental principles of molecular motors, cytoskeletal dynamics, and intracellular organization.
Vale’s scientific contributions have been recognized with many of biology’s highest honors, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, the Canada Gairdner International Award, the Massry Prize, the Wiley Prize, and the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, EMBO, Indian National Science Academy, and the Royal Society.
In addition to his research, Vale is a leader in science communication and open science, having founded initiatives such as iBiology (now the SCL), ASAPbio, and IndiaBioscience.
