tyrone Hayes is the Judy Chandler Webb Distinguished Chair for Innovative Teaching and Research and Professor and Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Hayes is best known for his research on the agricultural herbicide atrazine, which demonstrates its interference with the endocrine development of amphibians. His work has been widely covered in publications including the New Yorker and Mother Jones, and he was the subject of a mini-documentary directed by Jonathan Demme. Hayes has been recognized with the E.E. Just Award (2010), the E.O. Wilson Award (2013) from the Center for Biological Diversity, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2021) and the National Academy of Sciences (2023). He grew up in South Carolina and earned his PhD in integrative biology from UC Berkeley after studying organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University.
